Hackert Lake Association

Minutes of the Membership Meeting

Amber Township Hall

May 22, 2001

The meeting was called to order by acting President Bob Haupt at 7:10 p.m. Sandy Steckel read the Treasurer’s report. As of May 22, 2001 we have $1,348.41. Expenditures due are $601.23.

Members discussed the proposed contract with Dr. Hamdy Helal and West Shore Community College for the year 2001 lake study. Cost will be the same as last year - $1,100. Motion by Dan Bradshaw and seconded by Laurie Hamilton to retain Dr. Helal and his program for the year 2001. Votes were unanimous for retaining him.

Guest speaker was Ellie Koon, from the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Sea Lamprey Management Program. Ellie showed slides of the program in Michigan and in particular in the Pere Marquette River in Custer. Her excellent presentation inspired many questions from the group during the question and answer session.

Bob Haupt, along with board member Paul Schultz, reported on their meeting with the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Environmental Quality in Cadillac on May 5. Consensus was that Dr. Helal’s reports provide a good database for further action in planning for future care of the lake. They suggested that studies might be conducted less often in future years. Very few lakes have such good surveys done. In future we will be looking into self-help programs directly with the DEQ and checking further concerning available grants.

The nomination committee was selected with Paul Schultz as chairperson. We were again reminded that the picnic would take place August 12 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
