Hackert Lake Association
Meeting
of Officers, Board and Committee Members
Members Present: Bob Haupt, Sandy Steckel, Shirley and Frank Salas, Gail Kowalski, Harold Kling, Paul Schultz, Tony Swider, Boyd Trommater, Laura Hamilton, Jerry Mucinski, Leona Mucinski, Jerry Suchy, John and Linda Ochs.
President Bob Haupt called meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.
August Picnic/Annual Membership Meeting: Sandy will obtain McDonald’s gift certificates for children’s door prizes. She will ask Mrs. Ruba to get children’s prizes for games. We will try to get the Scottville Choo-Choo again this year. Shirley moved that we authorize a $50 donation for the Choo-Choo; John seconded.
Decided that according to the By-Laws the Annual Meeting must be held in July, so we can’t combine it with the picnic this year. We will discuss with membership the feasibility of changing the annual picnic to July, combining it with the annual membership meeting. Discussed having the July meeting on a Sunday evening to encourage greater participation. Laura moved and Gail seconded the motion. The 2001 annual meeting will be either July 22 or July 29, depending on availability of the hall. Laura will get meeting signboards to Paul for setting up prior to meetings.
Membership Drive: Tony and Jerry will get flyers about water safety and distribute to newer members. Sandy told us that to date we have 58 paid members, down from 67 last year. There are a total of 104 potential member families on the lake.
2001 Lake Study – 2002 Changes with DEQ/DNR: Bob said that some members received flyers from a company trying to sell chemicals to kill the aquatic plants in our lake. This company charges $2.85/sq.ft. for the chemical treatment. Unless the entire lake is treated annually, this is a futile venture. All present agreed unanimously that we do not want our lake treated with chemicals. The company claims to be approved by DNR. Paul moved and Bob seconded the motion that Shirley will write a letter to the DNR and DEQ under Lake Association letterhead requesting that they do not give permits for treating the lake with chemicals. We will discuss with membership at the annual July meeting.
DNR and DEQ people have told us that we already have enough information from Dr. Helal’s studies to last us ten years. We currently have Dr. Helal contracted for 2001 and after that we will become involved in self-help programs offered by these agencies for watershed studies and land water studies on the lake. This will include finding out what is causing the phosphate levels to increase in the lake. Bob and Paul are working on getting study grants toward this end.
Other Important Items: Laura Hamilton continues monitoring the lake for certain elements with the Secchi Disc. Laura has a booklet showing the results for our lake and others.
Bob announced that walleye fingerlings were planted two weeks ago. He also suggested the possibility of planting fathead minnows to feed the walleye and pan fish. Simply putting a Christmas tree under your dock where it does no harm to the lake and is out of the way can create breeding beds for the minnows.
We discussed the barrels and other debris divers have seen in the lake near the DNR ramp. They volunteered to get them out for us. Since the bungs are closed, we have no idea what the barrels contain, but they could be hazardous to the lake. John moved that we ask divers to get the barrels out and Jerry Mucinski seconded the motion.
Meeting adjourned at 9:50 p.m.
