Membership Meeting and Potluck Dinner
Sunday, May 19, 2002
Amber Township Hall

The meeting was opened by President Bob Haupt, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Treasurer’s report was read as follows: Balance $1373.49 Expenditures $23.00

NEW BUSINESS:

  1. Bob Haupt proposed that HLA contract with WSCC for a lake study again this year. The report will be month to month rather than at year end. John Ochs made motion to contract for the lake study. Seconded by Sarah James. Motion carried.
  2. Weed Control: A question was raised regarding mail solicitation received by several residents from a company which uses chemicals along the shoreline to kill weeds. The cost to residents would be $135.00 per 50 feet. Bob Haupt reported the board does not recommend chemical weed control. They only go 4 ½ feet from shore. This will not affect Eurasian Milfoil. In his opinion, lot owners would be wasting their money. However, if the company has a permit, the association can’t prevent individuals from chemically treating weeds.
  3. Chilberg Swim Area: Gary Andersen, representing Chilberg Subdivision, reported the area is still being used. Gary is interested in purchasing and placing buoys for the safety of swimmers. After much discussion it was decided Gary would compose and send a letter to Chilberg Subdivision residents for input and feedback. Gary has already obtained a permit for 4 buoys. The approximate cost of each buoy is $77.00. There was discussion and speculation about HLA contributing to the costs of the buoys. Gary will report on the results of his letter at the HLA Board meeting in late June.
  4. Fathead minnows: Bob Haupt reported the cost of 10 gallons of minnows @ $32.00 per gallon would cost HLA $320.00, plus he would do a plankton study and if necessary, purchase soybean meal for approximate $30.00 (300 lbs.) This would be for using some of the minnows in a pond to produce more for the lake

. Discussion re: how minnows would affect lake and improve lake conditions. Minnows would be purchased from Stoney Creek Hatchery, Grant, Michigan There would be a delivery fee of $75.00, but this would insure a guarantee of the condition of the minnows. Paul Schultz made motion to accept recommendation of the committee to purchase minnows and have them delivered. John Ochs seconded. Motion carried.

  1. Watershed Project. Bob Haupt reported that Linda, from Soil Conservation Dept. and Dave Peterson from Dept. of Agriculture have both agreed to help HLA on this project. The committee will pursue this 2-yr., very necessary, project.
  2. Mert Hackert reported there is a check at the Scottville Bank left from the Gas Line Association. With appropriate signature this money (approximately $400.00) can be obtained and could go to HLA and/or Chilberg Subdivision. Ruth Gustafson is the contact person at the bank. Bob Haupt will pursue this issue.

OLD BUSINESS:

Laura Hamilton inquired about a Secchi Disc report from Michigan Lakes and Streams. Laura had sent them $35.00 along with data and has not heard back from them. Bob Haupt reported he also has not received the report . Bob commented on a seminar in Boyne City to train someone to do these reports, but questioned if the expense is warranted.
